Why understanding grammar matters…

#Randbrackets, The Fun New Out-Of-Context Game

You want to know why education is important and why not understanding grammar is a bad thing? Here’s a great example for you. Look at those brackets in the above quote attributed to President Obama. Those mean something. Do you know what? They are not there for emphasis, they are not there to highlight the words within.

When writing a paper or an article or anything where you’re expected to have a bit of integrity, you use brackets like that to indicate you’ve made a change in the original quotation, usually for clarity. They are not used to add erroneous information or change the meaning of the quote – at least they’re not supposed to be used that way.

What they’re doing here is a blatant and outrageous… and wrong. This is a lie, pure and simple, Now, I’m not playing politics. I would say the same thing no matter who put it out: this has got to stop. I’m all for political debate and good old fashioned discourse, I love a good argument, facts against facts, and know that interpretation is everything, but this? No. This is just wrong. This is counting on ignorance and fear mongering.

It scares me a little that someone took that quote so out of context.
